The Book House, Summertown

Since the early days, The Book House has been a children’s specialist with around half the shop devoted to children’s books. Fat Puffin who guards our shop so prominently, is a sign of our enthusiasm. Puffin is such a celebrity in Thame, that he has his own feature in our website! Our children’s area has a play table at which your children can settle and amuse themselves.

Our range covers all ages from first books for babies, right up to young adult reads. Our display boards show the most recent publications or themed collections, whilst our shelves are stocked with a wide variety of classic and contemporary titles. We know that the large selection of books on display can seem daunting, are always happy to offer advice to help you make the right choice for your child.

We also stock a range of book-related toys, with “The Very Hungry Caterpillar”, “Paddington Bear” and “Peter Rabbit” making brilliant gifts for children of all ages. Some toys, however, are not for sale – and our large Maisy Mouse and ENORMOUS Hungry Caterpillar cuddly toys are well-loved by our younger, regular customers, and we’ve lost track of just how many cuddles they have received over the years....

Alongside our toys, we have a selection of cards and stationery for children.
In our conservatory we have a range of non-fiction books for children, with selections for history and science, as well a sport and hobby books. For holidays and other periods of leisure, our range of activity books runs from colouring and sticker books, through doodle and joke books as well as the wonderful titles in our favourite Klutz range.

Here you can also find our selection of poetry and religious books for children, including bibles and prayer books for christenings etc. The conservatory is watched over by Fungus the Bogeyman – who lives in our woodshed! See if you can spot him when you come in....

The children’s fiction is split in to age ranges: nursery, picture books, early readers, up-to-eight-year-olds, eight-to-twelve and young adult. We keep a range of hardback and gift fiction.

Should the book you desire not be on our shelves, our staff will be happy to research it, order it and – if in stock with the wholesalers – we should be able to supply it to you the next day, plus ring you to say it has been delivered!
